Running Containers

Managing Docker containers is a fundamental skill for containerization. Below is a guide to the most common commands for listing, managing, and inspecting your containers.

Docker Containers Running

1. Listing Containers

To see which containers are on your system, you can use the following commands:

  • List running containers: docker ps
  • List all containers (including stopped ones): docker ps -a

2. Lifecycle Management

Use these commands to control the state of your containers. You can refer to a container by its Container ID or Name.

  • Start a stopped container: docker start <container_id_or_name>
  • Stop a running container: docker stop <container_id_or_name>
  • Restart a container: docker restart <container_id_or_name>
  • Remove a container: docker rm <container_id_or_name> (Note: The container must be stopped first.)

3. Inspection and Debugging

When you need to look inside a container or monitor its health:

  • Get detailed information: docker inspect <container_id_or_name>
  • View container logs: docker logs -f <container_id_or_name>
  • Run a command inside a running container: docker exec -it <container_id_or_name> /bin/bash
  • Monitor resource usage: docker stats <container_id_or_name>
